Total 126,000 street lights on the way to convert to LED street lights
Starting from the year before last, the plan to convert high pressure sodium lamps with LED street lights in Nagpur from India has finished 30,000 of the total 126,000 traditional street lamps. The target is to mount remaining 96,000street lights into LEDs by the end of December.
The initial plan is to finish this job by 8 private companies by the end of July. While, it is the metro works that getting in the way of the whole work. Thus, this work has been postponed to December.
A spokesperson point out that some street lights will be mounted on two Metro corridors again about 3,000 street lights. While these street lights should be shifted again as it need 3-3.5 meter wide stretch on both sides of roads. And, local government allows installing street lights on Metro rail girders, cutting the cost of poles and wires.
It is estimated that the project will cost Rs470 crore, equal to 704,530,000 dollars. And Rs277 crore is used for upgrading street lights with LEDs, Rs106 crore for operation and maintenance of LED street lights for 99 months, more than 8 years. Actually these LED street lights produces less heat when in operation, thus they can last longer than traditional street lights.
Until this project to be finished, the street and somewhere need illumination will be brighter by these LED street lights than before. Also, the electricity bills and maintenance will be reduced accordingly.
